Pyrenean Chamois with Dennis Hirschfeld
This time Dennis was hunting for Pyrenean Chamois. For being late November there was very little snow, making this hunt a little harder. But we were patient and ended up taking a very good & old trophy.
This is the largest of the two native Chamois of Spain, both body and horns are larger than the Cantabrian Chamois.
Rupicapra Pyrenaica Pyrenaica
Shoulder height 29-30 inches (74-76 cm). Weight 55-90 pounds (25-41 kg). Summer coat is reddish, turning brown in winter. Underparts are pale. Rump, throat, lower jaw and front of face are yellowish. Larger and darker than the Cantabrian Chamois, with longer, thicker horns.
Steep alpine mountains, pine forests and rocky cliffs, with altitudes reaching up to 8,000 feet. Located in the Pyrenees Mountains of northeastern Spain and southern France. It’s approximately a 2-to-4-hour drive north of Barcelona, right on the French border.
October – January 31st, and March 1st – May 15th
Usually from the last week of October to the 3rd week of November
Challenging but feasible for most of hunters due to the multiplicity of dirt roads available throughout the hunting area.
